Technology has become a very important part of daily life over the years. It is all around us and will only become more prominent in the future. Most people have used some form of technology, but do they really know what makes technology work? How do our commands reach the device, how does the device understand the commands, and how does it “know” when to sleep and how to understand? How many people comprehend the inner workings of a seemingly “simple” piece of technology? Coding is a means of communicating and understanding a piece of technology. It is a skill that many people believe should be taught in schools to children to help nurture an understanding of the evolving society around us. Coding for some people is arguably one of the languages that should, in fact, be mandatory for kids to learn in schools.
The main question is, “why?”
It is very important for current and future generations to explore the world of technology and to, at least, have a basic understanding of how it works. A simple analogy: in schools, we are taught science so that we know how the world around us functions and is built. We are taught history so that we know how the world around us has come to where it is today through events. In the current day and age, technology makes up a significant portion of how we live our lives- even through mundane, simple tasks- therefore shouldn’t kids also learn how the world around us works in relation to technology?
Coding is the language of digital generation
Simply put, in order to have someone (or something) complete a task for you, you need to be able to properly communicate with them. Since technology is all around us and is continuing to dominate our world, it is important for us to be able to communicate with them. To allow them to help us, learning the language of the computers, otherwise known as coding, would be significantly beneficial.
Coding in the Real World
Learning how to communicate with computers would also be very advantageous in the professional workplace because many companies rely on and make use of technology to run the day to day activities. Whether it be a technology company or even a restaurant manager, technology plays a very important factor in running a business. Knowing how to code not only gives you an upper hand in the workplace, it also helps run things a lot smoother and allows there to be room for more innovation and getting things done efficiently.
In conclusion, our generation as well as the generations after us will rely heavily on coding as a mechanism to communicate with devices in the workplace as well as in everyday life. Therefore, coding can be viewed as the “reading and writing” of our generation.
