Advances in technology have changed the way students live, play, and learn.
Now more than ever, Florida educators use their ingenuity to adapt to both the ever-changing technology and the needs of today’s students. In many cases, educators are preparing students for jobs that do not yet exist. This is a formidable challenge; however, by teaching students essential 21st century skills through the merging of effective technology tools and best practices of instruction, transformative teaching is happening in Florida schools.
At Rex, we have matched Florida’s vision with our own.
STATE OF FLORIDA REQUIREMENTS
The State of Florida is currently responding to the current landscape in CTE and STEM education. As such, Florida has taken some great strides over the last few years to improve their computer science education.
- Florida, like many states, will allow computer science courses to count as a math credit for their graduation. However, it is not a core admission requirement for any institution of higher learning.
- Florida currently does mandate that secondary schools offer computer science as a course. Students can access via the Florida Virtual School if a district is unable to provide access.
- Florida has written K – 12 Computer Science Standards. They can be found here: Florida Standards
- Florida has not created a state plan for K-12 computer science education. This simply means that the state does not have a long-term plan for carrying out goals regarding computer science education or its impact for student preparedness in the workforce.
- Florida has a severe computer science teacher shortage. In 2016, Florida universities did not graduate a single new computer science teacher.

DID YOU KNOW

The field of Computer Science offers plenty of well-paying jobs, but less than 1 percent of the undergraduates enrolled in Florida’s universities earned degrees in that major last year.

State leaders hope a new $10 million investment to train more Computer Science teachers -- the largest in the nation -- and new flexibility in course requirements will help get more teenagers into Computer Science classes in high school and persuade them to stick with the subject once in college.
